Please complete Course 001, mail back your answers to us and we will take it on from there. God bless you.

Missiology Defined

Missiology is the study of missions. The word mission means “being sent out with authority to perform a special duty. Christian missions typically involve spreading Christianity from one culture to another culture.

So missiology, from a Christian perspective, is "the science of the cross-cultural communication of the Christian faith. ”http://mb-soft.com/believe/txo/missiolo.htm"

WHO IS A MISSIONARY?

There are many definitions of the word, 'missionary' but we will only mention this from Dictionary.com: a person sent by a church into an area to carry on evangelism or other activities, as educational or hospital work.

For the purpose of this study, however, a missionary would be defined under two categories:

The front-line missionary and

The home-based missionary.

As the name implies, the former is a full time missionary operating on a Mission Field - more often than not - under a cultural orientation alien to him.

On the other hand, the later is a home-based businessman, civil servant or professional. From his resources, he not only supports the front line Missionary financially, materially, morally and in prayer but also goes out of his way to mobilize his friends, coworkers, business associates, church members etc, to join him in doing so.

1 Corinthians 3:6 I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase.

In the 'division of labor' above, the front line Missionary is Paul. He (front-line missionary) goes to the mission field to plant the Gospel seed. He is a farmer, fully trained in bush clearing and ploughing the 'gospel land', planting the seeds, weeding and tending the crops. After he has done all of the above, he - like Paul - has done his part. Apolos now steps in to water the crops.

You, in your calling as a missions supporter, are that Apolos. God has provided you with the water - financial, prayer and material resources - that the crops need to develop.

When the physical efforts of the front-line missionary and the robust support of the home-based missionary are put together in a viable partnership, God takes over to give "the increase."

In the Apostolic age, missionaries like Paul were sent and supported by the Church;

Acts 13:2-3 " As they ministered to the Lord, and fasted, the Holy Ghost ssaid Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them. (3) And when they had fasted and prayed, and laid their hands on them, they sent them away."

NOTE: The missionary is called by God through the Holy Spirit and the sending is done by man through the Church.

This brings up an important question: Who or what is the Church?

THE CHURCH DEFINED.

The Princeton University English Dictionary defines Church as "The collective body of Christians."

1 Corinthians 6:19 What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?

This portion of scripture is referring to your body as the Church and dwelling place of God. As you can see, none of the above defines Church as a building, edifice or cathedral.

It is, therefore, your duty and calling as the Church of Christ - either corporate or individual - to send missionaries into the unreached nations of the earth.

Over the years, the Church both corporate and individual has failed God in this all-important command of "...Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature." (Mark 16:15)

A missionary on the mission field is like a soldier on the battle field. Without adequate supply of armor and ammunition he will succumb to the superior fire-power of the enemy.

It is, therefore, a grievous error that children of missionaries, INSTEAD of being at school, go rat hunting on the mission field - not because they hate education - but for the simple and painful fact that the schools are either not available or not affordable.

This is happening in a situation where the Church, the major stakeholder in the missions enterprise is wasting her stupendous financial resources in erecting monuments - cathedrals and towers of Babel - which have no eternal value or returns on investment.

The Church today is doing all the right things at the wrong places; preaching in big, city cathedrals to a people that had heard the gospel a thousand times and, in the process, had become constipated due to over feeding, while out there on the mission fields, thousands of Unreached People Groups have not had the opportunity of hearing the gospel for the first time in their lives. The Church only ventures out on "MIssions" to plant branches in already overchurched urban environments. MISSIONS INDEED!

The Church of Christ which, unfortunately, has become the sleeping giant should be roused from her slumber and her eyes opened to her enormous responsibility in world missions. I hope she wakes up soon enough.

This scenario applies both to the Church as a corporate entity and the Church as individuals.

However as she snores, we can come together as Missions Supporters and raise prayer, material and financial support for these missionaries who, indeed, are Christian soldiers in the field of battle.

This free online missions training prepares Christian volunteers to do one of the following:

Move into the mission field as front-line missionaries or,

Become Willing Missions Partners of Afrika4Jesus; raising prayer, material and financial support for front-line missionaries.

Students are instructed to examine their call to missions in line with the two options stated above and make a deliberate commitment to contribute their own quota to world evangelization and in the process, store up for themselves, treasures in the Bank of Heaven where neither moth nor rust nor economic meltdown can destroy.
